Explain to me parking lights.
My car has headlights (hi/lo), running lights, and low-mounted fog lights.

What would the parking lights be? If I turned my car off and the low-beam headlights dimmed?

Best picture I have of the Niva’s lights. Terrible picture shot with a 2mp phone camera, in the dark. But I can’t (or don’t want to) go out and take another because the battery’s sitting on the ground due having started the process of pulling the engine out to change the oil pan. But here’s a slightly better one of the Niva and MJ together:

Am I weird for randomly taking pictures of only my parking lights? Also I linked those photos in from Facebook so if they don’t work LMK.

Here’s the worst picture in the world of Dad’s V70 on the left, my V50 on the right, both with their ‘approach’ lighting on (i.e. parking lights, interior lights, side mirror puddle lights, rear parking lights)

I think its a very USDM thing, its your turn signal bulb or a dimmed low beam turned on along with your side markers and tail lights. In European cars you activate them by turning the car off and then activating the turn signal depending on which side if the street you are parked.

Thanks for that explanation and video. Here is one more question now: what’s their purpose?

I’m trying to think of times to use them but everytime I’m thinking, I would just use hazards/flashers.

Maybe in some place in the world its not allowed to leave a car with the hazards on. Also parking lights use less battery than hazards so you can basically leave them all night on if you parked on a dark road so your car is more visible.

A quick google search shows that they existed before hazard/flashers did on cars. They must have just stuck around due to laws or something as all North American cars have them. A lot of people will use them during sunrise/sunset where the headlights do nothing to light up the road, but it still may be difficult to see your car due to glare from the sun or shadows.

That’s a good point. It could very well be a single law in one market that requires them, making it easier for auto makers to just include it for everybody than to bother customizing that minutely.

As far as the battery goes, you think?? For one, the hazards appear to use fewer - or at least the same number of - lights than parking lights. And then you have the flashing functionality - which I can only presume uses less power than a static light...? But I’m only guessing this - I don’t actually know much about electricity - maybe it’s just a matter of flashers being converted to AC and normal lights being DC, both using the same power? I really have no idea.

I guess either way, both parking lights and hazards seem like they would be designed with minimal battery drain so that they can remain active for an extended period of time. Whatever that extended period of time is, I have no idea... couple hours? Do you know?
